Headlining this year’s Tricentennial Women’s Day on Friday, June 22, will be Dr. Renee Horton, speaking on, “Ladies, It’s Time to Make an Impact!” Horton, whose hearing loss created obstacles throughout her life and prohibited her from pursuing her dream of being an astronaut, is truly an inspiration. A college drop-out, young divorcee and mother of three, she returned to college and became the first African American to receive her degree in the area of Material Science with a concentration in physics from the University of Alabama. Horton has received numerous accolades and awards and currently serves as the NASA Space Launch System Metallic/Weld Engineer at Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans. She is on a mission to change the face of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and make an impact on others by helping them learn to thrive as their authentic selves.
